As a Regents Living Environment student you will be expected to:
Tests and Quizzes: 60 %
Announced tests and quizzes will be given once a week on average. However, I have been known to pop a quiz quite frequently. All tests will be styled in the format of the Regents Exam with both multiple choice and short answer questions. In addition, there will be a cumulative quarterly exam at the end of ALL marking periods. All tests count. There are NO drops. If you miss a test or quiz, it is your responsibility to arrange for a make-up upon returning to school. Failure to do so will result in a zero.
In addition, I firmly believe written or standardized testing does not always indicate everything you have learned. There will be various times throughout the year when projects will be assigned. These projects will range from essays, building models, group work and oral presentations. Projects will be graded as tests; therefore, it is imperative to treat them as such.
Laboratory Assignments: 20%
Students in Regents Science classes are required by NYS to complete 1200 minutes of successful, documented laboratory work. Lab reports will be filed once they are completed in your laboratory folder and will remain in our classroom at all times. Late work is not tolerated and will be penalized accordingly. Each quarter, at least 75% of labs must be completed, or it will result in an automatic failure as per district policy. In the Living Environment, there are four required state labs. Students who do not complete these labs will not be allowed to sit for the Regents Exam.
Homework: 10%
Homework will be given every night and will be assessed frequently. Homework is due at the beginning of class when it is collected and late assignments will not be accepted for credit. Students with legal absences are required to pick up missed work and submit missed assignments upon scheduling a due date.
Notebook and Participation: 10%
Attendance and preparation in this course are mandatory. Each quarter you can earn points for class participation. Tardiness and being unprepared will negatively reflect on your participation grade. Students who do their work during class and lab, take notes, participate and clean up will receive credit. Your behavior, cooperation, and overall attitude will be assessed in this section. In addition, during each quarter, notebooks will be collected and assessed for completeness which will also be reflected in this portion of the grade.
Course Materials and Resources:
You will be required to have the following items with you every day to be successful.
3 Ring Binder used for LIVING ENVIRONMENT ONLY divided into the following sections-
Colored Pencils
Graphing Marble Notebook
- Be Prepared – with the materials and an attitude to learn.
- Be Prompt – Lateness in any form will not be tolerated.
- Be Productive – both inside and outside of the classroom.
- Be Polite – to our classroom, yourself, your fellow students and your fearless leader. This rule is the single most important rule of our classroom. Our classroom is a learning environment and disrespect detracts from this environment and will not be tolerated.
